Screenwriter Rafael Jordan loved revisiting the characters at a completely different stage in their lives. “The concept that the weight of your expectations could actually derail your destiny, I found that very intriguing, ” Jordan says in Episode 433 of the Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy podcast. Humor writer Tom Gerencer was initially skeptical of Bill & Ted Face the Music, but found that it eventually won him over. “The end did really feel good to me, I’ve got to admit, ” he says. “I ended up being like, ‘Wow, they actually landed that. I didn’t think they were going anywhere with this, but it really felt good. '” Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy host David Barr Kirtley wishes the movie had been a bit more inventive, but thinks that it serves as a fitting tribute to the original films. “It seems like everyone involved loves Bill and Ted, and they just made this movie because they want to pay tribute to the characters and reward the fans for their loyalty over the years, ” he says. “So I think in terms of those things it basically struck the perfect note. ” Fantasy author Erin Lindsey says that watching Bill & Ted Face the Music is a great way to escape from all the chaos and conflict of the real world. “They couldn’t have known when they started making this movie, obviously, but I feel like this is something that we all need, to watch a movie that fundamentally consists of some sweet, lovely people trying to bring world peace, ” she says. How about after the whole adventure is over, we’ll get in the time machine, and we’ll go back in time and steal the keys and leave them for ourselves? ’ And then they’re like, ‘Well, where should we leave them? How about behind this sign? ’ And then they’re like, ‘Oh look. Here they are. ’ I think that that’s actually brilliant science fiction, and when I watched this in 1989, I thought that was really, really clever. You’re like, ‘The people who wrote this are obviously science fiction fans. ’ A non-science fiction fan in 1989 would never have come up with that, I don’t think. ” Tom Gerencer on the 1980s: “There was a student in our high school, when I was a kid, who came in on Halloween dressed as Rambo. He had actual guns, and an actual bandolier of live ammo wrapped around his shoulders and his waist. This was in Waterville, Maine—central Maine. He just came in and hung out, and then one of the teachers was like, ‘Is that actually live ammo? ’ And he was like, ‘Yeah. ’ And they’re like, ‘Oh no no no. You can’t have that in school. You’re going to have to go put that in your locker. ’ … And when I saw that Billy the Kid scene, that’s who I thought of. That, to us today, is like, ‘No no no no no. ’ But back then it wasn’t so crazy. ” Rafael Jordan on Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey: “I think it’s easily the best of the films, for a lot of reasons. It completes the two-movie arc really well, as a duology. The third movie’s great, but as a duology it finally ends with the battle of the bands, which was necessary and missing from the first movie. These guys are supposed to be legendary musicians, and we need to actually see that. So the climax of part two was the perfect ending of the two movies. It also finally had actual antagonists that created inciting incidents and created a story. You not only had Chuck De Nomolos, a former gym teacher turned time terrorist, but you have evil Bill and Ted, who were just hysterical. I couldn’t get enough of those two. ” Erin Lindsey on Bill & Ted Face the Music: “The one thing that just was a record scratch for me was they referred to Louis Armstrong as ‘Loo-ee’ Armstrong, which I don’t think is the preferred pronunciation. It’s interesting to me that if this movie is supposed to be about music and musicians, that nobody involved with the project was like, ‘That’s not actually how you say it. ’ It’s ‘Loo-is’ Armstrong. … I don’t know how his stage name almost became ‘Loo-ee’ Armstrong. A couple of years ago we were sent a sample history book from California to see if we wanted to use it. That is nothing new, we get sent books to test out all the time. But this one was incredible. Let me just put out some highlights; Columbus came to America for the sole purpose of murdering Natives and establishing slavery. African Chieftain Mansa Mansu had more to do with the Constitution than the Founding Fathers. Speaking of the Founding Fathers, they were nothing but rich racist white men who revolted only to increase slavery and murder Natives. Also, we unjustly revolted against our lawful King. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln get 1 paragraph each. Santa Ana was the hero of the Alamo against white men who only wanted to expand slavery. No mention of Travis, Bowie, Davy Crocket, or Sam Houston or anyone else. Gold rush was just another excuse to kill Native Americans. Robert E. BILL & TED FACE THE MUSIC is the third installment of Bill and Ted's story, which began with 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure and continued in 1991's Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey. Now, 30 years after they first became iconic on-screen teen slackers, Bill ( Alex Winter) and Ted ( Keanu Reeves) are middle-aged dads who have the opportunity to save the universe (again) if they can go into the future and write the perfect, unifying rock song. Orion Pictures Bill & Ted Face the Music Directed by Dean Parisot Adventure, Comedy, Music, Sci-Fi PG-13 1h 28m “Bill & Ted Face the Music” sounds like more of a reckoning than it is. It would be unbearable to think that William Preston and Theodore Logan, the goofballs first incarnated by Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves more than 30 years ago, could be candidates for cancellation. And though they may be longer in the tooth and heavier in the jowl than they used to be — as so many of us are — the dudes retain their essential innocence. They are still friendly avatars of nontoxic masculinity. No serious misdeeds resurface from their various time travels that demand judgment in the harsh light of the present. Which isn’t to say that all heinousness has been banished. That was the promised outcome of “Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey” (1991) — the second of the earlier “Bill & Ted” movies — which ended on a high note of rock ’n’ roll utopianism. The universe was united in song and the future was secure. Somehow, it hasn’t worked out that way, either on a personal or a cosmic level. Bill and Ted’s band, Wyld Stallyns (pronounced “wild stallions” for all you boomers and millennials who missed out the first time), has hit the skids, and so have the guys’ marriages. Their wives, Joanna (Jayma Mays) and Elizabeth (Erinn Hayes), serenely patient medieval English princesses, seek out couples therapy, to which the clueless husbands show up together. That unbreakable bro-bond is one issue. Others are the guys’ stalled ambitions and a stubborn and implicit disavowal of maturity. While this arrested development frustrates Joanna and Elizabeth, it seems to endear Bill and Ted to their daughters, Billie (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and Thea (Samara Weaving), shiny millennial apples who didn’t fall far from the Gen X tree. These young women, who address each other as “dude, ” might be better musicians than their dads. At any rate, they start out with a broader cultural frame of reference. And when an emissary from the future shows up with a dire warning — it’s Kristen Schaal, more or less filling George Carlin’s shoes — the younger B. and T. are sent into the past to recruit musical geniuses, while the elders are propelled forward to try to get their act together. I don’t want to explain too much about the science or the metaphysics of the journey. It’s all spelled out clearly and none of it makes all that much sense. I will note that “Bill & Ted Face the Music” adapts to changes in both musical taste and time-travel mechanics. Rock (now known as dad rock) isn’t the universal solvent it once seemed to be, and chronological displacement isn’t a simple linear thing any more. Now there have to be multiple timelines and ever more complicated models of contingency. Bill and Ted may not fully understand it. The screenwriters, Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, might not either. Beavis and Butt-Head were more abrasively satirical. Wayne Campbell and Garth Algar lived in a more fully realized social landscape. But Bill and Ted had more fun — capering through the centuries, meeting Freud and Socrates (both of whose names they mispronounced) and deriving a transcendently simple pair of lessons from their historical journeyings: “Be excellent to each other. Party on. ” Was it enough? Of course not. Bill and Ted belong to a generation so closely identified with failure as to be routinely erased from the record. The new movie, directed by Dean Parisot, is an amiable, sloppy attempt to reassert the value of friendliness and crack a few jokes along the way. The Wyld Stallyns bassist, Death (Bill Sadler), supplies a lot of those, as does a neurotic killer robot named Dennis (Anthony Carrigan). Various historical figures pop up, most notably a supergroup recruited by Billie and Thea from ancient China and Africa as well as less ancient Vienna and New Orleans. Great musicians are needed to save reality from collapsing in on itself. The high point of the movie is a harpsichord and Stratocaster duet played by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Jimi Hendrix, a nicely conceived and executed demonstration of how genius recognizes genius. That’s too strong a word to apply to “Bill & Ted Face the Music, ” which like its predecessors is winningly modest and harmlessly silly. I don’t know if it made me feel young or old, but it was all in all a most non-bogus experience. Bill & Ted Face the Music Rated PG-13. Mild heinousness. Running time: 1 hour 18 minutes. Their hellish scene came as the last shot of the night and “everyone was exhausted, ” Matheson says. They spent hours in makeup, though the most surreal experience was sharing screen time with Winter and Reeves. “It was very strange acting with them. And I was scared out of my mind. ” Elderly Bill and Ted rock out one last time During the movie, Bill and Ted travel to 2067 San Dimas, where their very old selves are lying in bed at Peaceful Pastures nursing home. And that’s also where the audience goes after the “Face the Music” credits roll for a final coda with elderly Bill and Ted. “Dude, are you dead yet? ” Bill asks. When Ted’s not, Bill tells him, “There’s one more thing we need to do. ” Out of bed and in pajamas, Ted grabs his Flying V electric guitar and Bill gets his red Gibson before they turn up the amps and unleash a most righteous shredding session. “We still got it! ” Bill exclaims before going for a high-five where Ted knocks his bud’s shoulder out of wack. “OK, I have to sit down.
